Good Or Bad: Fireboy DML road to Fame…


Adedamola Adefolahan popularly known as Fireboy DML or Fireboy is an upcoming Nigerian singer and songwriter.
Fireboy who hails from Ogun state was born 5th February, 1996 to the Adefolahan family in Sagamu, Abeokuta Ogun state, South Western Nigeria.

Fireboy had his primary and secondary education in Abeokuta Ogun state, after which he proceeded to Obafemi Awolowo University(OAU) Ile Ife, Osun state Nigeria where he studied English language and graduated with a Bachelor in Arts(BA) in 2017.

Fireboy is presently signed to Olamide’s YBNL Nation. His debut studio album Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps(LTG) was released in 2019.

His song ‘Jealous’ won Listeners choice and was nominated for song of the year at the 2020 soundcity MVP Awards Festival. DML is an acronym for Damola

Early career
Fireboy started singing at a tender age, he was a member of his local church choir in Abeokuta. While in the University, fireboy was well known as someone who loved music, he performed in shows and earned money from it, he was referred to as Damola.

After graduating from the university, fireboy moved to Lagos to pursue his music career. Having no relative in Lagos he stayed with some friends he made in school, While there he begged or sometime pay to perform in shows.

He later decided to re- strategize, with his friend’s musical instruments he began making his own songs and writing for other people.

Fireboy who was discovered by Olamide was signed into Yahoo Boys No Laptop (YBNL) Nation record label in October 2018, he was also taken along to Empire, an American music publishing group.

His signing was confirmed by Olamide the CEO of the record label, on his Instagram handle. Fireboy came into limelight after the release of his hit single ‘Jealous’, which was released two months after his signing.

Music career
His breakthrough single ‘Jealous, was first heard on YBNL Nation’s collaborative album YBNL Mafia Family released in December 2018, the song was track 5 on the 13 track album.

Despite not being popular the track was able to stand out and soon become a street anthem, this prompted the re- release of the song as a single on March 25, 2019.

The song which was centered around love and its complicated feelings, is a blend of African harmonies with a bit of country and soul music. It was produced by Cracker Mallo while the video was directed by K.

According to fireboy ‘Jealous’ was from experience.
Fireboy released his second single ‘What If I Say’ on June 14, 2019. The song which was also about love and romance was produced by pheelz, while the video was directed by TG Omori.

His third single ‘King’ was released August 1, 2019. The song was behind the popular phrase “fine boy wey come sabi sing,” it was produced by Echo, while the video was also directed by TG Omori.

Laughter,Tears and Goosebumps (LTG)
Fireboy’s debut studio album “Laughter,Tears and Goosebumps” was released November 29, 2019. The album which is made up of 13 tracks featured no guest artist.

It had over 6 million streams on Spotify three days after its release and it was listed for most streamed album on Apple iTunes top 19 chart, months after been released.

According to fireboy the title of the album was about the various reactions people have to music, that this three reactions are all felt when one listens to his songs.

The album was praised by most music critics, though they thought the genre should be R&B instead of Afro-life genre given by the artist.

The artist on his own said that Afro-life is not a genre but a movement, that his music which focuses on the lyrics is different and doesn’t deserve to be called just R&B, Afrobeats, or Afropop
He won the City People Music Awards Most Promising Act of the Year (2019) and Soundcity MVP Awards Festival Listeners’ Choice (2020) for Jealous.

Personal life

Though much is not known about his personal life, Fireboy DML who is single, tends to live a serene life. So far he has not been caught up in any scandal or unnecessary public drama since his rise to fame.

Fireboy has not specify signing any endorsement deal. In January 2020, Fireboy replaced Davido as the face of Apple Music #AfricaNow playlist. It is not yet specified if he’s paid or not, but this is a great achievement for our up-coming artist and we see it as a stepping stone to larger endorsement deals.
